Teaching of Reading

KS1 Reading Schemes

The school has its own structured phonics scheme, Letters and Sounds.

As a school we use Oxford Reading Tree, Read Write Inc, Project X and Collins Big Cat as reading schemes. We encourage children to read at home both to and with parents not just from the schemes but a variety of literature.

Considerable emphasis is placed upon children’s use and understanding of language through writing and reading. Creativity and imagination are encouraged while at the same time handwriting, spelling and overall presentation are essential elements of the English curriculum that cross into other subjects. English is taught within the Primary Framework for Literacy.

Teaching of Phonics

At St Philip Neri we use a programme called ‘Letters and Sounds’ .

Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource, published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007.  It is used widely in primary schools across the UK as the basis of phonics teaching.

It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills to children aged 5-7.  The aim of the programme is to have children reading fluently by the time they reach the age of 7.
